The search
continues: to find and identify new bioluminescent organisms on the Springbrook Plateau.
The Current Projects link of this scientific journal (above left) follows the studies of Glow Worms, Fireflies, Luminous Earthworms and Luminous Caterpillars.
In addition, this is also the only facility in Australia specialising in the reproduction of all currently known bioluminescent rainforest fungi.

Author beside this magnificent display of Omphalotus.
It was noticed at night on a hillside in the rainforest on our property.
It has been an unusual year climate-wise and different plants are fruiting out of season, the specimen above being no exception. Omphalotus usually fruits around May-June in the cooler weather. This year however it has decided to fruit mid-Summer. This tree produces enough light at night to easily read a newspaper from the light of the fungi.

Glow worm chemical reaction product= Water
At last....photographic evidence !!!

Pure water being produced resulting from the glow worm's use of a chemical reaction to 'burn off' it's body waste.

Of all six luminous fungi species in Australia, the Springbrook Research Centre has actually discovered, studied, and named four of the six species.

The specimen opposite is a possible new bioluminescent fungi discovered at Springbrook April 2009 and until verified as a new species, given the study name of:

Omphalotus spp.

Informative Introduction
An brief overview is conducted in the display area of the Research Centre prior to the guided tour. This introduction enables visitors to better understand what they will be seeing in the research display area.

The briefing also includes the the process of bioluminescence in as detailed or simple terms as you prefer.

Luminous Mushrooms
In the luminous mushroom season ( Late December ---> February ) you will be able to see luminous mushrooms that have been cultivated from clones of species newly discovered in our research area.
The fungus of these clones has been innoculated into logs that are stacked in the rainforest.
Our Research Centre is the only location in Australia that is intentionally growing luminous mushrooms.The Springbrook Research Centre is also the sole location worldwide where ( in season ) cultivated specimens of Mycena lampadis, one of the brightest light generating mushrooms in the world can be seen.
